UI/UX Design

Design that survives contact with engineering

A design is only finished when it can be built. We work in systems rather than screens — tokens, components and states — so that what gets implemented matches what was approved, including the edge cases.

Overview

What this covers

Engagements range from auditing an existing product to designing a new one end to end. Either way the output is a working system: defined tokens, documented components, and specified behaviour for loading, empty, error and permission states.

Accessibility is a design input, not a development checkbox. Contrast, focus order, target size and motion preference are decided while the interface is still being drawn, because they are far cheaper to get right there.

Business benefits

Why this matters commercially

What the work changes for your organisation, beyond the software itself.

  • Fewer surprises in build

Specified states and tokens mean engineering is not inventing the empty state or guessing a hover colour at implementation time.

  • Consistency by construction

A shared component system makes the twentieth screen look like the first without anyone policing it.

  • Accessible from the start

Contrast, focus order and target sizes are resolved in design, where changing them costs minutes rather than days.

  • Decisions you can trace

Research findings and rationale are documented, so later changes argue with the reasoning rather than with taste.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • User research findings and journey mapping
  • Information architecture and wireframes
  • Design token set covering colour, type and spacing
  • Component library with all interaction states
  • Responsive layouts from 320px upward
  • Accessibility annotations and specifications
  • Developer handover documentation

Our approach

How we work through it

  1. Understand before drawing

Research and journey mapping come first, so the interface solves the problem users have rather than the one we assumed.

  2. Systems before screens

Tokens and components are defined first. Screens are then assembled from them, which is what keeps a product coherent.

  3. Specify the unhappy paths

Loading, empty, error and no-permission states are designed explicitly. They are where most products quietly fall apart.
